22" Monitor for SQL 2005 Management Studio?
By Kalman Toth, M.Phil., M.Phil., MCDBA

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio combines SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer. Enterprise Manager became Object Browser in SQL 2005 and Query Analyzer is now Query Editor.

But there is lot more in Management Studio. There are new toolbars with buttons like XML editor toolbar. There are also more windows: Template Explorer, Solution Explorer, Properties Windows, Bookmark Window, Server Registration Window, Web Browser and Results Window.

Since I was working in low resolution for recording purposes, I had to keep resizing the Windows. There is an option to flip the Query Editor window to Full Screen to have larger editing area. That is useful to a certain degree, but you lose Object Browser to check out table schemas. You can also autohide the windows you don't need. Activate a window by clicking the anchor tab on the left or right side of the frame.

For practical purposes, SQL Server 2005 Management Studio needs high resolution 22" monitor. That is the only way to take advantage of the tremendous power imbedded in Management Studio.
